Ela Mergels
walking in between

In her book and photos, Ela Mergles focuses on the issues of masculinity and femininity, portraying the abolition of all limits that are placed on German transgender women and men. She is able to break all stereotypes, showing not only their usual portraits. She tries to capture the living environment: dreary flats, walls with souvenir pictures, bathrooms with cosmetics and clothes lying next to beds. The result is an authentic snapshot that provides an insight into the life and a sense of the lives of transwomen and transmen. And therein lies the difference to many other photographers who turn to the subject of transgenderism: nothing glamorous, no travesty of art, but also no tragedies, just normality.

(based on a true story)

Language: english

(based on a true story) by Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey is a photo novella, which can be told in many ways. The location is Rio de Janeiro, and the reader can follow the protagonist into the different worlds of an amazing city in which poor and rich live side by side together with sin, drugs parties and beach life.

(Klaus Honnef)"

"Cologne-based photographer Wolfgang Zurborn has a flair for finding the incongruities of day to day life we often overlook while we go about our business. In a series of images that cherish the absurd he leads the viewer through a cavalcade of vignettes in the strangest of most normal places. It’s just another walk around the block for Zurborn and his camera, but for the viewer, a revelation. (Bill Kouwenhoven)"

Labyrinth of Signs

For more than three decades, Wolfgang Zurborn has investigated the relation between photography and public space, while not trying to depict urban landscapes objectively, nor investigating human behaviour the way a journalist would. Rather he has posed a philosophical question by means of photography: How far is it possible for a subject in the digital age to attain individual cognition and performance in an everyday public context?
